How can I build credit?

I am desperate and really want to build my credit. I have a little credit, but my credit scores range from 400-550. I applied for a secured credit card, but was denied. I want to buy a house next year, but I need to work on getting my credit together NOW! I working on buying a car no later than November.

When I applied for unsecure credit cards and loans in the past, I was denied because I did not have enough credit.
So the question is, how can I establish a strong, solid credit history?

The first step, if you don’t already, is have some of your utilities put into your name (phone, gas, cable, water, whatever). If you have previous outstanding debt (medical bills), pay them down.

Go to the bank where you have an account, and speak with someone about getting an entry level credit card. Something with a very low limit. I know some banks, offer cards with like $500 limits.
